Dámaris is only 4.5 years old and she loves to paint. She won´t use the brush and leaves full responsability to her little fingers...no distractions, no looking to the other kids even when they spill paint next to her...she is in her own abstract world, painting. Her fingers won't stop blending red and blue and orange and white. She will only call me if she needs a different color: - "color morado"...¿tiene color morado? - It´s her favorite color but I dont have any left. I look around and say "No tengo". She is not really bothered by not having purple, she continues creating her art, quiet...very quiet.

When Christopher finished this painting, he came right away saying "maestro, maestro, maestro...mire, mire.mire" as he is pulling my jeans to get my attention. Then he goes and points at the snake and the spider in the painting, can you see them? They are both in white color and the only reason why they have black eyes and mouth is because I did not identify them right away. Chris noticed my hesitation and said "bueno, les pongo sus ojos".

This artist loves snakes and there is always one in his paintings, this is the first time he makes them white though...i wonder if the spider next to it had something to do with it.

Aleks o Alex for Alejandro, this is the name of this one little artist who came to our "clase de pintura" all excited after his first music lesson in the community. In his work you can see the "reloj grande" (big clock) which is to "play the instruments", as he said.

Akira Y. Yamamoto, natural de Japón, ha dedicado su larga carrera profesional a la promoción de las lenguas y culturas indígenas en peligro de extinción. Profesor emérito de antropología y lingüística en la Universidad de Kansas, ocupó el cargo de director de la Comisión de la Sociedad Lingüística de América sobre Lenguas en Peligro de Extinción y su Preservación, y fue director conjunto del Grupo de Expertos Ad Hoc de la UNESCO sobre Lenguas en Peligro en el Mundo. Yamamoto, escritor prolífico, ha publicado libros sobre las lenguas hualapai y kickapoo, y sobre haiku.

Idiomas en peligro de extinción

Natalia Sangama, una anciana de la tribu chamicuro, se lamentaba en 1999 diciendo:

Sueño en chamicuro,
pero no puedo contar mis sueños a nadie,
porque ya nadie habla más chamicuro.
Qué solitario es ser la última.

El chamicuro (o chamekolo) es la lengua vernácula de Lagunas, Perú. El atlas de la UNESCO de Lenguas en Peligro en el Mundo advierte que, restando sólo ocho hablantes del chamicuro, el idioma se encuentra en situación crítica. SegúnEthnologue 2005, el número de lenguas a punto de desaparecer ya alcanza las 6.912. El Recuadro 1 muestra la distribución por región de las lenguas en peligro.

Del total de lenguas existentes en el mundo, 347 son habladas por más de un millón de personas, mientras que un 95 por ciento tiene una cantidad bastante menor de comunicantes.

La desaparición de los idiomas en el mundo

El Atlas UNESCO de las Lenguas en Peligro en el Mundo (en adelante, el Atlas)clasifica 2.279 lenguas habladas en mundo de acuerdo a diferentes grados de riesgo de extinción. De este total, 538 se encuentran en estado crítico, pues sus únicos hablantes son ya ancianos y la interacción en esa lengua es ya rara o poco frecuente. Por lo tanto, es lógico pensar que estas 538 lenguas podrían desaparecer en unos pocos años cuando ya hayan fallecido todos sus hablantes.

Las lenguas desaparecen porque las personas dejan de expresarse en su lengua materna y utilizan otra que, en la mayoría de los casos, es la lengua dominante en las esferas política, económica, militar y religiosa.

Las principales razones para la desaparición de las lenguas, aparte de catástrofes de origen humano o natural, son:

• La lengua oficial de la educación no es la lengua materna del niño, de modo que su aprendizaje es deficiente.

• Los medios de comunicación masiva, entretenimiento y otros productos culturales se difunden a través de la lengua dominante.

• La lengua dominante tiene más prestigio social, mientras que la materna tiene menos aceptación.

• Urbanización, migración y movilidad por razones de empleo son factores causantes de la desintegración de las comunidades lingüísticas.

• Los mercados laborales requieren conocimientos que son transmitidos en lenguas dominantes en detrimento de las lenguas minoritarias.

• No se valora la pluralidad lingüística y se considera suficiente, y conveniente, el uso de una sola lengua dominante.

• El uso de una lengua dominante es conveniente para los estados (una nación — una lengua) y para las personas, con lo que es obligada la alternativa de educar a los niños en su lengua materna o en la lengua dominante.

Entre las diversas fuerzas externas que obran sobre una comunidad lingüística destacan las políticas públicas sobre el uso de una lengua. Las políticas nacionales que no dan amparo suficiente a los derechos humanos lingüísticos pueden obligar a una comunidad a abandonar su lengua natural, mientras que las políticas de apoyo promueven y mantienen el uso de las lenguas no dominantes. El documento publicado por la UNESCO, titulado Vitalidad y peligro de desaparición de las lenguas,presenta toda la gama de actitudes y políticas de los gobiernos, desde las que valoran la diversidad lingüística y protegen las lenguas no principales en un marco legal hasta las que promueven la asimilación de forma pasiva, activa o forzada a la lengua dominante.

Tales fuerzas externas influyen sobre la opinión que los hablantes se forman del valor y de la función de su lengua autóctona. Los hablantes de una comunidad lingüística no suelen tener una opinión neutral de su propia lengua, según revela el estudio de la UNESCO: “Puede la consideren esencial para su comunidad e identidad, y promuevan su uso; puede que la usen pero no la promuevan; puede que se sientan avergonzados de su lengua y, por lo tanto, no la promueven; o puede la vean como un inconveniente y eviten activamente su uso”.

SUNY Fredonia and Ollin Tlahtoalli Centro de Lenguas y Cultura Mexicana have created a full time study abroad summer program for students interested in an intense cultural experience. This program offers so much more than typical summer study programs.

For six weeks students will live with families in the city of Oaxaca, and attend personalized Spanish instruction in groups of two or three students. This makes possible greater attention to individual language needs and allows time for sociolinguistic and cultural components. Our aim is to increase our students´ understanding and appreciation of Mexican values, traditions and behaviors which can sometimes be a mystery to outsiders. We do this through carefully selected readings and presentations along with class discussions.

32 artisans from the Oaxacan community of Santa Maria Atzompa received six weeks of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) lessons during the months of October and November 2006.
Students learnt how to introduce themselves, describe their clay work and handle numbers. By having basic English knowledge on selling and describing their art, people from the communities have a better chance to directly sell their products to international visitors.

La familia lingüística otomangue es la más diversa en México en cuanto a la tipología de las lenguas y su clasificación histórica. Pero también es la familia más extensa en términos de número de hablantes—que probablemente sobrepasa un millón—y en su amplia distribución. Las lenguas otomangues se hablan desde San Luis Potosí en el norte hasta Oaxaca en el sur. Antiguamente se hablaban también desde Chiapas hasta Costa Rica. La mayor concentración de las lenguas otomangues se halla en el estado de Oaxaca, donde también se hablan varias otras lenguas indígenas no otomangues, como el chontal, huave, mixe, zoque y náhuatl. Free English lessons for Oaxacan Artisans

Ollin Tlahtoalli has recently organized an English program for Oaxacan artisans. The first group that received free English classes was from a community called Santo Tomás Jalieza, a small village of female weavers whose products witness the magic and ability of the first inhabitants to this region somewhere around 500 a.c. Actually, this village became one of the most important Zapotec ceremonial centers after a time of social and political turmoil that affected some of the most important cities of Mesoamerica, including Monte Alban and Mitla. Teaching these women was a remarkable experience, not only for their willingness to learn but for their personality and wisdom. There were seven people involved in this project, mainly participants of a teacher training program (SIT) and myself. I have taught English and Spanish for over ten years now and I have to say this was one of the most rewarding experiences both as a teacher and as the director of the center. Having these women at our center, learning a foreign language for their first time, has increased my motivation to continue running programs like this.

Hopefully, next year we´ll start a Spanish literacy program for people who had to abandon their hometowns looking for better opportunities here in the city. Unfortunately, many of these people were never given the opportunity to attend school and as they grow older the need to work surpassed the need to learn. Ours is a society that stigmatizes the poor and rejects those that look different. Our indigenous communities and their people have suffered this rejection and denial for many years up to the point where they do not consider themselves worthy of an education. This is so wrong. These people have made and continue to make Oaxaca what it is: a place full of colors, traditions and magic.

Ollin Tlahtoalli is located in the city of Oaxaca, the fifth largest state in Mexico.
Oaxaca is perhaps one of the richest places in Mexico for its flora and fauna, traditions, legends, ethnic groups and of course, for its native languages. Although the official language is Spanish, there are over seventeen native languages that are spoken all around the state. The two most widely spoken are Zapotec and Mixtec, each with more than one variety or dialect. There are, however, languages like Ixcateco that are at verge of extinction.
