Ollin Tlahtoalli: Spanish Center in Oaxaca, Mexico

The name of the language center is composed of two Nahuatl words “Ollin” and “Tlahtoalli” which mean movement and language respectively; it is a way to honor the ongoing process of language change. We provide Spanish lessons within a cultural framework and develop projects aimed at preserving and promoting indigenous languages and local traditions. Our Projects

Among our current projects is one that focuses on linking international students and teachers with Oaxacan university students as well as more rural Oaxacans who have had limited educational opportunities. The program will bring these groups to Oaxaca in order to participate in mutual learning workshops that will involve travel to various rural communities as well as opportunities to live with local families. The goals of the project are wide-ranging and reciprocal. By promoting an equal exchange of information among rural and urban Oaxacans and students and teachers from other cultures, the program encourages an appreciation and re-validation of Oaxacan cultural, social and linguistic values, not only within the Oaxacan community, but also across cultures. One important premise of this undertaking is that an understanding and appreciation of the diversity within one’s own culture leads to a better appreciation and respect for other cultures.
